Abstract. Close-up video was used to record responses of the aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Homoptera: Aphididae) to the plant-derived repellent polygodial. When 0.1% (±)-polygodial was painted onto one half of a Chinese cabbage leaf disc, and the other half treated with the ethanol solvent, apterous adult aphids avoided walking onto the polygodial-treated area during 15 min access periods. Similarly, when the rim of a small plastic Petri dish was treated with polygodial, aphids took significantly longer to walk off the base of the dish and onto the rim, compared with insects in solvent-treated control dishes. Analysis of video-recordings indicated that aphids were repelled following contact of antennal tips with the polygodial-treated areas of leaf or plastic. In contrast, aphids with both antennal tips surgically removed showed no apparent response to polygodial treatment of leaf or plastic surfaces. Aphids were placed between polygodial- and solvent-treated angled glass cover slips to enable unilateral presentation of polygodial on either the left or right side of the insects. Most aphids with antennae intact moved away from the polygodial-treated side, but removal of both antennal tips again negated the response. When the tip was removed from only one antenna, and the other remained intact, unilateral presentation caused a repellent response only if polygodial occurred on the same side as the intact antenna. Presentation of polygodial on both sides of aphids (bilaterally) caused no response if both antennal tips were intact or removed, but aphids with only one antennal tip removed were repelled from the side where the antenna remained intact. The results indicate that aphids detect polygodial upon contact with sensilla located on the antennal tips, and that the repellent response occurs as a negative chemotropotaxis following unilateral stimulation of these sensilla. Contact between the antennal tips and glass substrates was demonstrated using a fluorescent pigment.  相似文献

Paraneoplastic syndromes are systemic reactions in patients with cancers that are unrelated to tumor size or location. Cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes include proliferative, metabolic, and inflammatory skin disorders. Both systemic and cutaneous paraneoplastic reactions may occur in patients with malignant melanoma. Cancers, including melanoma, may produce growth factors, which may be responsible for proliferative cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes. A patient with malignant melanoma we previously reported, who had the sudden onset of acanthosis nigricans, skin tags (acrochordons), and seborrheic keratoses provides a model for proliferative cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes. High levels of α-TGF were found in the patient's urine prior to melanoma removal. The increased level of α-TGF declined after the melanoma was removed, and a corresponding clinical improvement in his acanthosis nigricans, skin tags, and seborrheic keratoses occurred. In the skin lesions, EGF receptors were abnormally present throughout all epidermal layers prior to melanoma removal, and returned to their normal distribution in the basal layers after surgery. Ectopic growth factor production by malignant melanomas and other epithelial neoplasms may cause rare, but distinctive cutaneous paraneoplastic lesions. The model of melanoma, cutaneous paraneoplastic syndromes, and growth factors may provide understanding of both cutaneous lesions associated with neoplasia, and benign cutaneous lesions.  相似文献

Here we describe the complete nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial genome (16 583/4 bp) of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). Primers were designed based on highly conserved regions of an alignment of three passerine complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences. A combination of overlapping long polymerase chain reaction (PCR) purification, followed by fully nested PCR and sequencing was used to determine the complete mtDNA genome. Six birds, from distinct maternal lineages of a pedigreed population were sequenced. Five novel haplotypes were identified. These sequences provide the first data for sequence variation across the whole mitochondrial genome of a passerine bird species.  相似文献

Rationale and Objectives. To reduce tibio-femoral misalignment, the polyethylene bearing-component of a new knee prosthesis was allowed limited motion on the underlying metallic component. The object of the work presented here was to develop a suitable radiographic technique for quantifying the in-vivo position of the bearing. By collecting these data at discrete flexion angles, the functional operation of the prosthesis could be determined

Methods. The known geometries between landmarks on the two components were used to produce algorithms for reconstructing their spatial positions from a single radiograph. A custom-designed computer program utilized these algorithms to determine the relative translation and rotation of the polyethylene component

Results. This technique produced typical errors of 0.54 mm translation and 0.56° rotation between the polyethylene component and the underlying metallic component

Conclusions. A practical method has been developed for assessing mobile-bearing motion, in vivo. This method can be applied to other prosthetic devices, or combinations of components, once the requirement for identifiable landmarks has been addressedClinical Relevance. Skeletal and soft-tissue changes in the pathological knee may produce abnormal rotations and translations in the transverse tibial plane. This technique is intended both to validate the design philosophy of a mobile-bearing prosthesis and to provide additional data on any pathological motions, which will have implications for future prosthetic designs.  相似文献

Abstract Many current wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) harvest models assume density-independent population dynamics. We developed an alternative model incorporating both nonlinear density-dependence and stochastic density-independent effects on wild turkey populations. We examined model sensitivity to parameter changes in 5% increments and determined mean spring and fall harvests and their variability in the short term (3 yr) and long term (10 yr) from proportional harvesting under these conditions. In the long term, population growth rates were most sensitive to poult:female ratios and the form of density dependence. The nonlinear density-dependent effect produced a population that maximized yield at 40% carrying capacity. The model indicated that a spring or fall proportional harvest could be maximized for fall harvest rates between 0% and 13% of the population, assuming a 15% spring male harvest and 5% spring illegal female kill. Combined spring and fall harvests could be maximized at a 9% fall harvest, under the same assumptions. Variability in population growth and harvest rates increased uncertainty in spring and fall harvests and the probability of overharvesting annual yield, with growth rate variation having the strongest effect. Model simulations suggested fall harvest rates should be conservative (≤9%) for most management strategies.  相似文献

As competition from lianas reduces fitness of host trees, lianas could influence community composition and structure if potential host species differ in susceptibility to infestation. We quantified infestation frequencies of Chilean temperate rainforest tree species by the massive liana Hydrangea serratifolia (H. et A.) F. Phil (Hydrangeaceae), which climbs using adhesive adventitious roots, and examined relationships with host light requirements and stem diameter. We recorded presence or absence of H. serratifolia in a random sample of 515 trees ≥10 cm diameter. Fifty‐four per cent of trees were infested by at least one individual of H. serratifolia. Although there was significant interspecific variation in infestation frequency, this variation was not systematically related to light requirements of host tree species. Probability of infestation increased with diameter for most host tree species, and old trees were found to be infested by a wide range of liana size classes, including some stems <2 cm diameter. This evidence supports the proposal that lianas which attach by adhesive roots can colonize host stems of any size.  相似文献

Abstract.  The relative roles of olfaction and vision in the crepuscular host-finding process of a major lepidopteran pest of cruciferous crops, the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella are investigated in a series of laboratory and semi‐field experiments. Flying female moths use volatile plant chemical cues to locate and to promote landing on their host, even in complex mixed-crop environments in large cages. Multiple regression analysis shows that both the plant position (front, middle or back rows) and the type of plant (host plant, nonhost plant) are needed to explain the distribution of insects in such a mixed-crop situation. This strong plant position effect indicates that, when host plants are present in a mixture, foraging P. xylostella are more likely to alight on the first row of the plants. The findings are discussed with regard to current theories of host-plant location by phytophagous insects and the possible implications for integrated pest management.  相似文献

Here we present nine novel, polymorphic microsatellite loci developed for the scleractinian coral Acropora millepora (Acroporidae) from the Great Barrier Reef. In addition, we have assessed the specificity and polymorphism of five microsatellite loci previously developed for a Caribbean congener and one locus developed for an Indo‐Pacific congener. Only one of the latter six loci produced reliable results, yielding a total of 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci for A. millepora. Variability was tested on 20–23 individuals from a single population, plus another ~10 individuals from each of three different populations, resulting in five to 20 alleles per locus.  相似文献
